Chapter 49: When I Present Me, I Present Me | Juke dreams so vividly he is not sure if he is asleep or awake. Dad gets Juke ready for church. Juke is excited to dress up in a suit and tie. Juke shows off his clothes to Mom. Juke eats while Mom and Dad get ready for church. |
Chapter 50: Pew Positioning Pointers | Juke rides with Mom to church, with Dad in a separate car. Juke is excited to see the people he knows at church but most of them are not there. The family sits in their regular pew behind a large, rowdy family. A woman with orange hair greets Juke. |
Chapter 51: Kolob Is the Greatest of All the Kokaubeam | Church starts with hymns, a prayer, and announcements. Teenage boys pass the sacrament. The Bishop tells the congregation that Juke has moved to Winchester to live in a group home. The Bishop recognizes “the Pack,” a group of young men Juke’s age who are renowned for how united they are, who are leaving for Mormon missions. Juke thinks about how he would like to be in “the Pack.” |
Chapter 52: Just Go to Hell You Damn Fool | Dad and Juke leave church early. Juke goes to the bathroom and Dad changes Juke’s clothes. Juke carefully puts on his ribbon of keys. Juke eats lunch. Mom comes home. The family has “family home evening,” which consists of going to the living room and singing songs accompanied by piano. The family sings their own original hymn. Mom and Dad discuss what it means to be “special.” |
Chapter 53: I Could Be Induced | The family enjoys a fun Sunday afternoon watching car racing, eating popcorn and chocolate sheet cake, and going for a walk in the wheelchair. |
Chapter 54: For Dust Thou Wast | The family listens to songs until Dad says it is time to go “back.” The family share a group hug. Mom changes clothes and leaves in a separate car. Juke rides with Dad. Juke sees Mom sadly saying goodbye to him from her rearview mirror before Dad turns the other direction. Juke senses things are different between Mom and Dad. |
Chapter 55: Of the Noble and Great Ones | Juke suspects they are driving “back” to the group home. Dad stops at an ice cream place with a long line where they meet Gloria and Lucy, who are sisters. Lucy has disabilities and is in a wheelchair, and Gloria works at Planter—including at Juke’s residence. Dad and Gloria talk about people with disabilities and how the Mormons say they are “of the noble and great ones,” meaning they are the best people to live on Earth. Dad drops Juke off at the group home and leaves. Juke plays on a swing and eats dinner. |
Chapter 56: Oblivion | Gloria arrives at the group home. Gloria and Juke talk about weekend visits and getting ice cream. Juke gets a bloody nose and Gloria helps clean it up. Gloria gets Juke ready for bed. Juke gives Gloria his ribbon of keys and Gloria leaves. Another woman brings Juke a drink of water. Juke thinks about his dreams and the weekend, his new home, and all his friends, but most of all his family. |
