Inspired by reality, Of the Noble and Great Ones is a literary novel about living a fulfilling life when dealt the worst hand.
Juke is a charismatic teenager with autism and profound intellectual disability. When he attacks Mom and several caregivers, Mom and Dad make the difficult decision to send their son to live in an out-of-town institution.
Juke struggles in his new group home: the other residents each have their own challenges; Juke’s needs are ignored; and the overnight staffer is abusive. After a tough first day of school, a kind caregiver treats Juke well.
Dad picks Juke up for a surprise weekend visit and the family enjoys Juke’s favorite activities. During a pool day, Mom and Dad discuss the trauma of Juke’s life and question their Mormon beliefs about people with disabilities. Back at the institution, Juke says goodbye to his family and a nice caregiver consoles him.
Juke dreams each night of the heroes Emily and Julian in a mysterious pre-mortal world where “spirits” must prove whether they follow God or Satan. In this world, life ends at birth. Emily and Julian overcome assaults by wicked Angels and Dragons. God proclaims them “Of the Noble and Great Ones,” meaning they are preeminent spirits.
Emily and Julian volunteer for a treacherous mission against Satan’s Army. Their attacks are futile and fail. Emily and Julian are sentenced to be “induced” (executed).
Emily and Julian are tempted by Lilith and her husband, Satan. They enjoy a relaxed day while Lilith shares simple teachings—memorialized in modern scripture—to live a happy life. Emily and Julian achieve enlightenment before being induced, and Emily promises Julian he will never be forgotten.
Juke wakes up in the institution and realizes his identity. His heart fills with gratitude for family (Emily) and caregivers. The round spins on.
