Chapter 41: Weekenders | Juke wakes up at the group home but does not see anyone he knows. An aide tells Juke that Dad is coming to take him home for the weekend. After the aide gets him ready, Juke paces and strips. Dad arrives and Juke gets redressed. Dad and Juke talk as they drive. Dad announces they are going to the mall and to do other activities that Juke likes with family and friends. |
Chapter 42: Jubilee | They meet Mom at the mall. Dad and Juke ride the escalators while Mom shops. They go shop and as they are walking a group of teenage boys mocks Juke. Dad and Juke ride the escalators again and drive home. |
Chapter 43: Know Your Cats | Dad and Juke arrive at home, followed shortly after by Mom and the family’s friend, Noelle. Juke greets his cats. The family and Noelle eat lunch and cake. |
Chapter 44: The Aura of a Snort | The family prepare to swim in the pool. Juke wears his swimsuit, life jacket, and pool shoes. Juke splashes lots of water. Dad and Noelle talk about the new group home and why Juke had to move there. Dad doubts God has a plan for Juke. Juke enjoys the pool. |
Chapter 45: I (E?) P in the Pool | Juke throws the ball in the pool while the family and Noelle talk about Juke’s education plan at Planter, which Dad criticizes as unrealistic. They take a break for a snack. They return to the pool and talk more about the events of the prior week and the negative influence of Jacobsen, the school district social worker. |
Chapter 46: Burp Up the Works | Juke exits the pool but has swallowed a lot of water. Noelle leaves. Mom and Dad get Juke ready. Two local Mormon leaders, the Bishop and Brother Huxley, arrive to check on Juke. Brother Huxley empathizes with Mom and Dad by talking about his daughter with a learning disability. The visitors leave, and Juke and Dad listen to songs. Dad murmurs about how faith cannot heal Juke. Juke burps. |
Chapter 47: The Original Exclamation | Juke eats dinner. Mom and Dad debate happiness. Juke puts his cup away but on top of the refrigerator. Juke uses his “dancing dolphin” sign for ice cream. Mom opens the refrigerator door and the cup falls. Juke swears and everyone laughs. Juke says, “All day!” and the family discuss where that expression came from. |
Chapter 48: Less Talk, More Life | The family watches music videos. Juke performs his best dance moves and debuts a new one. Mom gets Juke ready for bed and Mom and Dad say goodnight. Juke wonders if dreams can come true. |
