Emily

From the “Say the Gods and the Righteous” prologue to Of the Noble and Great Ones:

The question, of course, is “Who is Emily?”

Mom and Dad

The most muddled [muddliest?] element of Of the Noble and Great Ones, of course, is the riddles of Juke’s dreams, and the trick to dream interpretation is to solve the core riddle of how Juke’s nights resolve his days. The first clue toward understanding is to determine, “Who is Emily?

Hint: the answer is staring you in the face. Or, to be even more explicit, there’s this excerpt from the intro of the Wednesday night dream:

“Emily, brave Emily. I love Emily for what she does for me. She does everything. Emily is family.

Emily is family.”

Of the Noble and Great Ones, Wednesday Night

The word “Emily” may be replaced with the word “family” everywhere you see it in the dreams, commencing with the first dream on Monday night. Emily’s status (her location and condition) always corresponds with the status of Mom and Dad during the preceding day, including primarily whether Mom and Dad are together or apart.

In reality, Juke’s family has changed since the events in Of the Noble and Great Ones. Mom and Dad are both remarried. Now Juke has even more family. To Juke, they all are Emily–the love of his dreams.

The next question, of course, is, “Who is Lilith?”
